“The Dao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, Three gives birth to all things.”
Taoism originated in the mid to late Eastern Han dynasty, evolving from a synthesis of various elements including the Daoist philosophy of the Warring States period, the Huang-Lao school of thought, the practices of the Fangxian (immortality seekers), and indigenous folk beliefs in celestial deities. In the late Eastern Han period, Zhang Daoling established the Way of the Celestial Masters (also known as Zhengyi Dao) in present-day Yizhou, Sichuan. He honored Laozi as the Grand Supreme Elder Lord (Taishang Laojun) and formally founded a structured Taoist religious order.
Over time, Taoism developed a more refined religious system. By the Tang dynasty, it gained significant imperial support, with Laozi being venerated as the imperial ancestor of the Tang royal family.

Dao” (often spelled “Tao” in older transliterations) translates to “the Way” or “the Path.” It is a fundamental concept in Chinese philosophy, particularly in the Tao Te Ching by Laozi. The Dao refers to the natural order, the ultimate reality, or the underlying principle that governs the universe and all existence.
Taoism is a philosophical and religious tradition that developed in China, based on the teachings of Laozi (author of the Tao Te Ching) and later thinkers like Zhuangzi. It encompasses a system of beliefs, practices, and texts that aim to align human life with the Dao.
